Iraqi police officer killed in Baghdad

An Iraqi police officer was shot dead along with his two bodyguards by unknown gunmen in eastern Baghdad on Thursday morning, a well-informed police officer said.

"Maj. Basim Mu'ideed Abdullah, from Baghdad police was gunned down with his two bodyguards at a road junction near the Sha'ab Stadium in eastern Baghdad," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces and police, accusing them of collaborating with U.S. occupation forces.

Meanwhile, also in eastern Baghdad, several mortar rounds landed in Baladiyat neighborhood, wounding four people, according to the identical source.
