font size

Singapore on Friday evening said it understands and supports the Philippine government's decision to postpone the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), due to the coming typhoon Seniang disturbances.

Singapore's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, "We thank them for their concern for the safety of the leaders and delegates attending the ASEAN Summit."

The 12th ASEAN Summit, originally scheduled for Dec. 10-14, has been postponed to January 2007, the Philippine National Organizing Committee for the summit announced late Friday.

On the same day, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo met with Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo in Cebu, the Philippines, according to a statement by Singapore's Foreign Ministry.

They had an exchange of views on the ASEAN. Both ministers expressed confidence that the Leaders would endorse the Eminent Persons Group's (EPG) Report and recommendations that would form the basis for the drafting of the ASEAN Charter.

They also agreed that it was important to bring forward the establishment of the ASEAN Community to 2015.
