Germany summons Iranian envoy over Holocaust conference
font size

The German Foreign Ministry called in Iran's top envoy in Berlin on Friday in protest against a Holocaust conference to be held in Tehran next week which attempts to deny Holocaust, a spokesman said Friday.

"The German government condemns as unacceptable all comments which ...raise doubts about the Holocaust," said Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner.

"The Iranian charge d'Affaires was called in ...to make this unmistakably clear," he said.

The Tehran conference, held by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, claimed it wanted to discuss the scale of the Holocaust and whether the Nazis really used gas chambers to kill Jews.

Researchers from about 30 countries, including Germany, are expected to attend the conference.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had called the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed, a myth, and has called for the destruction of Israel.

"We condemn all past and future attempts by those who give a platform to people who put he Holocaust in question," said the German spokesman.

However, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mohammadi has said in Tehran that the aim of the conference, dubbed " Holocaust, World Prospect," was to give scholars a chance to discuss the issue freely "without getting involved in political issues or propaganda."
