U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Thursday that the United States seeks changes to the draft resolution imposing sanctions on Iran, although she said that the United States is "very supportive" of the draft resolution.

"We are very supportive of the European Union draft. There are some changes that are still to be made to that draft ... and we're working on that draft," Rice said after her meeting with visiting Canadian Foreign Minister Peter Mackay.

The United States wants a resolution that tells Iran "the international community is not going to tolerate its defiance of the international community's desires and the international community's demands," Rice said.

Rice expressed confidence that the draft resolution, put forward by Britain, France and Germany, will be passed by the U.N. Security Council.

The United States has expressed hope that the U.N. Security Council can vote this week on the draft resolution imposing sanctions on Iran for its defiance over its nuclear program.

The United States has been seeking to impose sanctions on Iran through the U.N. Security Council on the grounds that the Islamic country develops a nuclear weapon program under the cover of a civilian program. However, Iran has said that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
