The United States said on Thursday that it will continue its effort in the new year to pass a UN Security Council resolution over humanitarian and political situation in Myanmar.
"We remain concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian and political situation in Burma, which poses a threat to stability in the region," State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said, using the former name for Myanmar.
"We believe the time has come for the Security Council to take action to express its deep concern about Burma," Casey said, noting the U.S. will pursue a UN resolution over Myanmar issue "as soon as possible in the new year."
Washington has been accusing the government of Myanmar of imposing political repression and threatening regional peace and security. However, Myanmar categorically rejects the accusation.
