Passengers on China's railways made 1.25 billion journeys in 2006, a rise of 8.5 percent year on year, sources with the Railway Ministry said on Sunday.

Rail cargo transport grew 6.8 percent to 2.87 billion tons in 2006.

The ministry forecast the railways would complete 1.36 billion passenger journeys and carry 3.06 billion tons of cargo in 2007.
