Iran's Rafsanjani calls for wisdom, generosity in nuclear issue

Iran's influential former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on Sunday that wisdom and generosity are needed in dealing with Iran's nuclear issue, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"They (the Western countries) should act wisely and refrain from doing anything dangerous; our officials too should settle the ongoing problems with generosity," Rafsanjani said in a sermon at Tehran University to celebrate the Islamic holiday of Eid-e Qurban.

"Any problem by any of the parties would be hard to compensate, " he said, adding that "any fire thus ignited would be harmful for many."

Rafsanjani, Chairman of Iran's powerful Expediency Council also said that there is no ambiguity in Iran's nuclear activities.

"The quality of our nuclear program is clear to all: there is no ambiguity in the nuclear activities and the Islamic Republic of Iran has time and again announced that it is ready to remove dark points, if any, through negotiations," he said.

Rafsanjani held the opponents of Iran's nuclear programs for any possible ambiguities, according to the IRNA report.

"Those opposing the activities have caused the ambiguity and the anti-Iran UN Security Council resolution is the result of such attitudes," he said.

The senior Iranian official also said that the Security Council resolution contains many "menacing" points and shows that "enemies of Iran's Islamic Revolution" have plans against the country.

The UN Security Council Resolution 1737, adopted unanimously on Dec. 23, demanded that Iran "suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, and work on all heavy water-related projects."

The resolution also called on all states to impose a ban on trade with Iran in goods related to its nuclear programs and ballistic missile delivery systems.

It demanded that "all states shall freeze the funds, other financial assets and economic resources" owned or controlled by officials and companies in the country's nuclear and missile programs.

Iranian officials have rejected the resolution as an "illegal measure" and vowed to continue the country's nuclear programs.
