Third-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium knocked out Asian Games winner Danai Udomchoke of Thailand 6-2 and 6-2 in the first round of the 416,000 US dollars Chennai Open tennis tournament in India on Monday.
The 26-year-old, who ranked 37th in the world, wrapped up the match in just 61 minutes while the Thai number two player blamed lack of practice for the defeat.
"I didn't make as many mistakes as he did -- that was the key," said Malisse who sent in five aces and committed just one double fault against the Thai's four.
"I practised for just three days for this event," said Udomchoke, the world number 104. "I had to attend many ...functions in celebration of the Asian Games victory, and was left with very little time to practise."
Meanwhile, fourth seed Julien Benneteau, who ranked 40th, and eighth-seeded Nicolas Mahut, both of France, also advanced to the second round.
Benneteau came over 112th-ranked Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-4, and world number 66 Mahut saved two break points in the ninth game of the second set to beat 108th-ranked Colombian left-hander Alejandro Falla 7-5 and 6-4.
