Haneya enters Gaza quietly after visit to Saudi Arabia: witnesses
font size

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya entered Palestinian territories Thursday through Gaza-Egypt border without any troubles, winding up a visit to Saudi Arabia, witnesses said.

The witnesses said that they had seen Haneya and his delegation leaving Rafah border crossing with their convoy driving homeward.

Media reports said Haneya returned home while cutting short his regional tour, adding he reached the Gaza-Egypt border around midday.

It was not immediately clear if he returned with large sums of money like last time in mid-December when Israel prevented him carrying tens of millions of U.S. dollars in donations from crossing the border after winding up his first regional tour as the premier.

Israeli Ha'aretz daily has reported that unprecedented security measures were taken with coordination between Israel, Egypt, the Palestinian National Authority and European Union to secure that Haneya carries no weapon or money into Gaza.

Haneya left the Gaza Strip via Rafah border crossing on Dec. 28, embarking on the second regional tour, with Saudi Arabia as the first stop where he made pilgrimage to Mecca and performed the hajj.

He had planned to visit Kuwait and Jordan after Saudi Arabia but decided to cut it short on Wednesday, without giving any reason.

Jordan had earlier offered to host a meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Haneya to defuse mounting tensions between their rival Fatah and Hamas movements, but the date was not set yet.

Asked about reports that the Jordan visit had been canceled, Mohammed al-Madhoun, chief of Haneya's office, told reporters that "the delaying of agreement on Haneya 's visit to Jordan doesn't mean the visit has been canceled."
