More soldiers to station at Bangkok's Chatuchak weekend market

About 100 plain clothes soldiers would be reinforced at Bangkok's Chatuchak weekend market to increase security at the popular market, according to Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin.

Apirak was quoted by Bangkok Post news website on Saturday as saying that there are currently 180 security guards stationing at the market, and 100 more would be added.

Sixteen closed-circuit televisions will be installed at the market to ensure public safety, said Apirak.

Garbage at the market will be collected every hour, said Apirak, adding that transparent trash bags have already been distributed to vendors Saturday.

The market, covering about 14 hectares in northern Bangkok, opens only for Saturdays and Sundays in daytime. It has been an attraction to both local residents and tourists, with its nearly 500 stalls selling cheap household goods, traditional instruments, ornaments and clothes.

Security measures at crowded places in Bangkok have been tightened up after the capital was hit by a series of bombings that killed three people and hurt dozens.
