Britain to tackle Islamic extremism in local communities

The British government is to launch a 5-million-pound scheme to help local authorities deal with Islamic extremism.

Under the scheme to be announced later in January, local councils will work with the Muslim community to fight Islamophobia, Sky news reported on Saturday.

A government spokeswoman said the scheme was part of a "huge" program to tackle extremism, which includes dealing with radicalization in institutions such as prisons, universities, colleges and schools, said the report.

Under the scheme, law enforcement agencies are expected to improve intelligence-gathering, and civic and theological leadership will also be supported.

The government hopes the new scheme will help prevent a repeat of the July 7 London suicide attacks in 2005 when 52 were killed in the rush hour public traffic.
