Cambodia's ruling party committed to valuing people's power, unity
font size

The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) will stick to its consistent policy of valuing people's power and unity, said CPP Chairman Chea Sim on Sunday.

"People are those who made the history and are the determinants of every success in the national reconstruction and defense, and are the greatest political base for the country's leadership," he said in a speech for the party's commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the downfall of the Democratic Kampuchea (DK) regime.

Therefore, he said, in every political program and activities of any political party, it needs to serve the people with honesty, while not considering them means to achieve own goals.

Chea Sim, who is also Senate President, stressed that "unity is one of the core elements of people's successes, without which there will be a disaster for the nation."

In addition, all forces must be absolutely loyal to supreme interest of the nation and there must be respects of different opinions in democratic society, he said.

Meanwhile, he said, peace and reconciliation are intertwined, while peace can't be achieved by force and it can only be achieved through honest wills from different political bases.

In the same sense, mutual understanding, compromises, reconciliation are the fundamentals conducive to peaceful union and collaboration and at the same time, avoiding social conflicts, he said.

On the other hand, he said, there must be the need to strengthen other necessary bases such as education and promotion of non-violence culture, democracy, human right respect, good governance and there must be an effort to promote living condition of the people in order to ensure peace and sustainability.

"The CPP must commit themselves to protecting and strengthening the foundation of Cambodia's independence and sovereignty while expanding ownership and self-confidence," Chea Sim said.

"The history teaches us that the weakened independence and sovereignty from any reason will lead to weakening fall, disunity, war, disaster, outside disrespect toward our nation," he added.

Some 10,000 CPP members attended the ceremony at the party headquarters in central Phnom Penh, which was presided over by CPP leaders, including its Deputy Chairman and Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The CPP, the largest political party of the kingdom, has been in power since 1993, with some 4.1 million members.

It now plays dominating roles in the government, the Senate, the National Assembly and the military forces.
