One killed in anti-Ethiopia protests in central Somalia
font size

One person was killed and another wounded when hundreds of angry anti-Ethiopian protesters took to streets on Sunday in the central Somalia city of Beletwein, about 330 km north of the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The protesters were chanting anti-Ethiopian slogans and burning tyres in the streets. Somali government troops and Ethiopian soldiers fired shots to disperse the demonstrators and one person was killed and another wounded during the chaos.

The demonstration was ignited following the arrest of local military commander Colonel Muqtar Hussien Afrah after he released Sheik Farah Maollin, former chairman of the Beletwein Islamic Courts who was pardoned by the transitional Somali government.
