Vietnamese economic crimes up 1.1 pct in 2006

Vietnam detected 11,256 economic crimes in 2006, a rise of nearly 1.1 percent over 2005, local media reported Monday.

The economic crimes caused an estimated loss of 2,504 billion Vietnamese dong (VND) (156.5 million U.S. dollars), Youth newspaper reported, quote the Police Directorate under the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security.

Most of the cases involved corruption, smuggling, counterfeited goods, tax evasion and intellectual property violation, said the paper.

Vietnam discovered 11,134 economic crimes in 2005, which caused a total loss of 2,311 billion VND (over 144.4 million dollars).
