New UN envoy arrives in Sudan
font size

Jan Eliasson, UN secretary general's envoy to Sudan, arrived in Khartoum Tuesday on his first visit to the country since he was appointed to the post on Dec. 19.

Unpon his arrival, Eliasson told reporters that he, representing the United Nations and the entire international community, came to Sudan with a message of solidarity with the Sudanese people.

He hoped that peace would be achieved in cooperation with the Sudanese leadership for the benefit of the Sudanese people, the region and the whole world.

The UN official is due to meet Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol as well as other senior officials on Wednesday before heading for the western Sudanese region of Darfur to get acquainted with the situation there.

New UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had set the Darfur issue as one of his top concerns.
