U.S. Ambassador to Greece on rocket-attack against embassy
font size

United States Ambassador to Greece Charles Ries expressed in an announcement issued on Friday his appreciation for the quick and professional response of Greek law enforcement agencies to the early-morning rocket-propelled missile attack against the U.S. Embassy.

He noted that Greek police, and other Greek law enforcement officials have worked well and efficiently together with Embassy security personnel in analyzing the scene of the crime.

The ambassador remarked that he was "pleased with the political support offered by the Government of Greece and the main political parties, and with their determination to apprehend the perpetrators of this attack and prevent further attacks."

He said that he was also "confident that the effort to damage the strong relations between the United States and Greece will not succeed."

The U.S. Embassy will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, for the Martin Luther King holiday, but will reopen on Tuesday for its usual business.

The U.S. Embassy in Athens was attacked early Friday by a rocket that exploded inside the Embassy building but caused no casualties. Police said the attack was probably carried out by a domestic terror group.
