Danish top badminton player Peter Gade, who flew to Kuala Lumpur to compete in the Malaysian Open, fell ill and was sent to hospital upon arrival, local press reported Monday.
The world number five in men singles' ranking had complained of severe migraine and vomiting during his journey from Copenhagen to Kuala Lumpur.
He was taken to the medical room at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport immediately after arrival Saturday evening and was then admitted to the Gleneagles Hospital in Ampang near here.
Local English daily The Star said Gade looked "lethargic" and " pale" when met by its reporter Sunday in the hospital. The 1998 Malaysian Open champion waved his hand but said he did not want to be disturbed.
Coach Thomas Stuer Lauridsen, who was by his side, said that they would look at Gade's recovering situation and decide whether he should participate in the Malaysia Open or not later Monday.
"But the good news is that Peter is recovering. He has lost a lot of fluid and he is taking a lot of water to replenish. We hope to see the redness back on his face," said a hopeful Lauridsen.
Gade said he was also attacked by severe migraine when he was 18 years old, the coach told The Star, adding the hospital had taken several tests and the results have yet to come out.
The 2007 Malaysian open is the first leg of the Super Series of the Badminton World Federation. It will kick off Tuesday with the qualifying tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras.
