The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) has demanded the Democratic People 's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for nearly 1.9 billion U.S. dollars in compensation for the abandoned light-water reactor project in DPRK under the 1994 Agreed Framework, the South Korean Yonhap News Agency said Tuesday.
KEDO has asked for compansation for its assets at the construction site in DPRK in at least three letters sent to Pyongyang since May last year, Yonhap quoted an unnamed diplomatic source as saying.
Following the adoption of the 1994 Agreed Framework, the United States, Japan, South Korea and the European Union formed the KEDO to conduct the construction of two light-water reactors in DPRK and provide oils to Pyongyang in exchange for Pyongyang's freezing of its nuclear programs.
However, the light-water reactor project, which had been suspended for years due to distrust between Pyongyang and KEDO member states, was totally terminated last year amid escalating tensions over the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
DPRK has yet to respond to the claim, the unnamed official told Yonhap.
