Iraqi policeman killed in bomb attack in Baghdad

A roadside bomb went off near a police patrol in a central Baghdad area on Wednesday, killing a policeman and wounding two others, a well-informed police source said.

The blast took place in the Ghrnada Square in the morning as a police patrol tasked with protecting electricity facilities was passing by, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A police vehicle was damaged in the attack, he said, adding one policeman was killed with two others wounded.

The attack came a day after a series of deadly attacks in Baghdad that killed at least 103 people and injured more than 240.

The new wave of violence raged across the capital in the wake of the announcement by the Iraqi authorities and U.S. forces on Monday that they were going to carry out a new security plan in Baghdad to crack down on illegal militants from all sectors.

U.S. President George W. Bush also pledged to send additional 21,500 soldiers to Iraq, most of them to Baghdad.
