Chinese sense of security rises: survey

Chinese people's confidence in the country's public security system rose in 2006, according to a survey Wednesday in Beijing.

The survey showed 15.4 percent of those interviewed felt "very safe", 40.1 percent felt "safe" and 36.5 percent felt "generally safe". Combining all three results shows 92 percent of those asked felt safe, a rise of 0.1 percent over the survey in 2005.

The survey conducted by National Bureau of Statistics polled over 102,448 people over the age of 16 in 31 provinces, autonomous region and municipalities, according to Chinese Ministry of Public Security here Wednesday.

The survey also showed that 48.2 percent of respondents thought the public security authorities' fight against crimes was "effective", up 5.7 percent over 2005.

Chinese police solved 1.947 million criminal cases in 2006, up 4.3 percent over the previous year, according to statistics released from a meeting of the Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Public Security Wednesday.

Police authorities also broke up 1,347 criminal gangs and launched judicial proceedings against 296 of them, according to the committee.
