Russia says Hamas to recognize earlier accords with Israel
font size

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) is ready to recognize earlier accords with Israel thanks to the joint effort of Russia and Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.

"Hamas is ready to recognize in the platform of the government the previous accords with Israel and the decisions of the UN and the Arab League... They would be able to reach an agreement soon," Lavrov was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

"This is the nature of our work, including efforts by Syrian authorities in line with an agreement with us," Lavrov said at a President Vladimir Putin's meeting with the government members.

The quartet of Middle East mediators grouping the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States "will try to realize this potential," the minister said, adding that "discussions will be complicated."
