The Republic of Cameroun

Lying in the the central-western part of Africa, the Republic of Cameroon covers an area of 480,000 square km and has a population of 16.3 million belonging to 237 ethnic groups. Most of the residents believe in Christian and Islam. English and French are the official languages. Yaounde is the national capital. The current president is Paul Biya.

The relationship between China and Cameroon has been developing smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries on March 26, 1971. Great progress has been made in bilateral cooperation in the fields such as economy, trade, culture, education and public health. The two countries have been cooperating closely in international affairs and promoting the local and non-governmental exchanges. In 2002, Zhu Rongji, then Chinese premier, visited Cameroon. In 2003, President Paul Biya visited China. Bilateral trade came to 197 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
