Lying in the southeastern part of Africa, the Republic of Mozambique covers an area of 800,000 square km and has a population of 19,130,000, mostly believing in Catholic, Islam and primitive religions. Portuguese is the official language. Maputo is the national capital. The current president is Armando Emilio Guebuza.
China has vigorously supported the Mozambican people in their struggle for national independence. On July 25, 1975, the very day when Mozambique declared independece, it established diplomatic relations with China. Since then bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. Tian Jiyun, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, visited Mozambique in 2000. Mozambican President Chissano visited China in 2004. Bilateral trade amounted to 165 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
