The Romanian government is taking measures to curb the spread of flu in schools after a remarkable rise in the number of patients with the illness and other respiratory diseases across the country, Romania's Realitatea TV reported on Tuesday.
In January, Romania registered a significant rise in flu cases, upper respiratory tract infections and pneumonia. The eastern part of the country is the worst hit by the epidemic and several patients have died.
To prevent a further spread of the disease in schools, the Romanian Health and Education ministries have asked medical workers to beef up inspections in schools and daycare centers, and give flu prevention tips to students as well as their parents.
On Tuesday, medical workers began physical examinations of students in the capital city of Bucharest, advising those with flu symptoms to rest at home or seek medical treatment in hospital.
Under the orders of the disease prevention authorities, students cannot go back to school until they have made a full recovery.
Romanian experts recommended citizens inoculate themselves with flu vaccines, pay attention to personal and dietetic hygiene, and avoid contact with flu patients.
According to experts, the warm winter is the main cause of flu outbreaks in Romania this year. The Romanian Health Ministry has stockpiled 1 million flu vaccines for the coming two months.
