A seminar on the theory developed by Deng Xiaoping, the architect of China's economic reforms, opened on Wednesday in Guang'an, a city in eastern Sichuan Province, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the late Chinese leader.

It is the second of its kind. The first was held in 2004.

Gu Xiulian, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the three-day seminar, attended by more than 100 Party and government officials, as well as specialists.

More than 70 academic research papers on Deng Xiaoping Theory have been submitted, said the organizer.

During the seminar, participants will hold discussions and exchange views on Deng Xiaoping's Theory which is rooted in pragmatism.

Before the opening ceremony, participants visited Deng Xiaoping's former residence and a hall where items associated with Deng are displayed, and deposited a flower basket before a bronze statue of Deng.

Deng Xiaoping was born in Guang'an, Sichuan Province, in August 1904. As one of the most influential figures in modern Chinese history, Deng had held many governmental posts including vice premier of the State Council and chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China.

By following the pragmatic policies masterminded by Deng, including the reform and open-door policy, Chinese people have started to become prosperous.

Deng died in Beijing in February 1997 at the age of 93.
