Romania withholds comment on U.S. use of military basesThe Romanian Defense Ministry failed for the time being to comment information published by international media on a possible utilization of American military bases in Romania in an eventual attack against Iran, the national Rompres news agency reported on Tuesday. Defense Minister Sorin Frunzaverde is paying a working visit to the United States on Jan. 30 - Feb. 3. An eventual attack launched from Romania would be relatively hard to imagine because the military bases made available to U.S. forces by the Romanian authorities serve only training purpose, sources from the ministry were quoted as saying. British publication "Sunday Herald" published in its online edition an article reporting that American military bases in Romania and Bulgaria might be used by U.S. air force in an eventual attack against Iran. "Sunday Herald" took over an information released by the Bulgarian news site Novinite.com, according to which "American forces could use the two military bases in Bulgaria and the base in Romania in order to launch an attack against Iran, in April". It is hard to say at the moment, if the news published in Bulgaria is a false alarm or a strategic move. But, taking into account preparations made at American bases in Italy and the plans to deploy some anti-missile installations in the Czech Republic and Poland, events in the Balkans seem to indicate a new stage in the war against terrorism, pointed out "Sunday Herald" commentators.
