Japanese veterans dance to victory at Winter Asiad

Japanese veterans Nozomi Watanabe and Akiyuki Kido pulled off the ice dancing figure skating title at the 6th Asian Winter Games on Saturday.

Watanabe, 36, and Kido, 32, collected a total of 151.93 points to win the top honor, making one step higher on the podium after their runner-up finish in the last Games in Aomori, Japan, 2003.

They scored 76.97 in the free dance to lead the field of four pairs again. They topped the standings after the compulsory dance and original dance with 74.96.

Huang Xintong and Zheng Xun finished second in 150.06 with 76.66 in free dance as the 20-year-olds got their first medal in their first journey to the Asian Winter Games.

Yu Xiaoyang and Wang Chen added the bronze to China's medals tally as the pair, both at 21, had 138.36 in total with 70.57 in free dance.

In earlier competition, World University Games bronze medalist Xu Ming of China lifted the men's singles title in the figure skating.

Xu, 25, topping the short program the day before, had 66.03 in element score and 62.16 for program component to lead the free skating to make it 194.19 points in total.

His compatriot Li Chengjiang remained in the same position as he did last time in Aomori, Japan, 2003 when he collected 121.56 for his free skating and his total score was 184.20.

Kensuke Nakaniwa of Japan, fourth after the short program, took the bronze in 179.13.
