Syrian customs officers have foiled an attempt by an Iraqi truck to smuggle arms into Lebanon through one of its border crossings with its smaller neighbor, the official SANA news agency reported on Sunday.
The interception happened at the al-Arida border point through which the truck was heading to the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, the report quoted a customs official as saying.
Light arms and ammunition hidden in the truck were confiscated and the suspects were apprehended for further interrogation.
The report did not specify the time of the incident and to whom the arms would go.
Syria has been accused of smuggling arms into Lebanon and aiding the Shiite Hezbollah movement, but Damascus has denied the accusation, saying its support to Hezbollah was only political.
Hezbollah was defined by the United States as a terrorist organization whose struggle, however, was legitimate resistance in Damascus' eyes.
