Polish, Czech senate speakers discuss U.S. anti-missile shield
font size

Polish Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz discussed the U.S. anti-missile shield with his Czech counterpart Premysl Sobotka on Tuesday.

Borusewicz said negotiations on the U.S. anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic should be conducted simultaneously with the two countries.

Poland and the Czech Republic "should play in the same division" as far as the shield is concerned, Borusewicz told reporters after the meeting.

"These are negotiations and the sides will be tough. The U.S. surely wants to give as little as possible and we will try to get as much as possible," the PAP news agency quoted Borusewicz as saying.

The United States has made a formal offer to Poland and the Czech Republic on the shield. Under the proposal, Poland could be the base for underground missile silos and the Czech Republic would host the radar system.

Poland and the Czech Republic agreed to start detailed discussions with Washington.

The project, if built, would be the biggest element of the MDI shield outside the United States. Main components of the anti- missile system are already being built in California and Alaska.
