A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement on Wednesday said his party is determined to reach an agreement with Hamas during their talks in Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca to end infighting.
"Fatah is carrying a number of options that could push the agreement forward and prevent its failure," added Fatah spokesman Abdel Hakim Awad.
Talks between senior leaders of Fatah and Hamas are to launch on Wednesday in Mecca, Islam's holiest city. The talks were called by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz.
Mecca talks, which gather Abbas, Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal and Prime Minister of Hamas-led government Ismail Haneya, are considered to be a last-ditch effort to end the bloody conflict in Gaza and the Palestinians expect the two factions to reach consensus.
Fawzi Barhoom, a spokesman for Hamas, said Mecca summit came after a year of Israeli, American and European siege on the Hamas- led government and after "very difficult situations lived by the Palestinian people."
At least 30 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza this month in fierce clashes between Hamas and Fatah.
