Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops exchanged fire with Lebanese army soldiers near border between Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday night, an IDF source said.
The shooting erupted after an armed man apparently from the Lebanese army opened fire on Israeli troops searching for bombs planted by Hezbollah guerrillas, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Responding to continued shooting, an IDF tank fired two shells in the direction of the gunfire, the source added.
The source told Xinhua that, by far, the shooting was over, but IDF's operation in the area is still going on, adding that no injuries were reported from both sides.
Meanwhile, Israeli military officials were quoted by local daily Yedioth Ahronoth's website as saying that Israel has no intention for war with Lebanon, underlining that Israeli soldiers fired shells toward Lebanese army posts on Wednesday evening in self-defense.
Israeli soldiers have been combing the area for explosives planted by the Lebanese Hezbollah, Yedioth Ahronoth said.
An IDF statement released earlier in the day said that the IDF engineering forces are currently operating in the area where four explosive devices planted by Hezbollah were uncovered on Monday.
The statement underlined that the activity is taking place within Israeli territory and it aims to confirm that no additional explosive devices are located in the area and to make it difficult for Hezbollah to conceal explosive devices in the area in the future.
The statement said the operation will furthermore emphasize the Israeli sovereignty along the international border and increase the effectiveness of IDF operations along the border.
