The Indonesia government asked Israel on Friday to stop the excavation work near Muslim holy mosque of Al-Aqsa in Palestine otherwise it could trigger new tension and hamper peace process in the region, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said.
"We want to call Israel to terminate this (excavation)," Minister Wirayuda told a press briefing, adding "it could disturb (the activity of) the mosque that has been considered as a holy building for the Muslim in the world and create a new tension that can hinder peace process in the Middle East."
The excavation begun on Tuesday by Israeli has drawn protests from Palestinian and other Muslim countries in the region, he said.
Indonesia, which has no diplomatic relation with Israel, has been taking part in effort of creating peace in the Middle East region since some years ago.
The country has initiated for the meeting of Hamas and Fatah leaders in Jakarta for the establishment of a unity government of Palestine.
Besides, Indonesia has also sent over 1,000 troops to Lebanon to joint the peace keeping operation over there.
