Brazil launches campaign against child sex abuse ahead of carnival
font size

The Brazilian government launched a campaign on Friday to fight sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.

The Special Human Rights Secretariat, part of the Tourism Ministry, will lead the campaign supported by the ministries of health, education, justice, transport, social development and anti-hunger.

Tourism Minister Walfrido Mares Guia said that the most important goal is to increase cooperation between ministries, states and municipalities.

"The federal government has assumed responsibility, the Brazilian society is fighting against this abominable practice and we are moving forward our battle," he said.

The campaign, which will start by targeting abuse during Brazil's traditional Carnival, will include the distribution of postcards, stamps and flyers bearing the number 110 for reporting such crimes.

More than 1,000 volunteers will take part in the distribution effort, which will be supported by television advertising and radio announcements.

Airlines will also broadcast alerts on the sexual exploitation of children, and anti-exploitation movies will be broadcast on the close circuit television systems of 11 Brazilian airports.

The Federal Highway Police and National Transport Infrastructure Department will distribute materials on the country's main roads.
