Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay on Wednesday welcomed a landmark nuclear agreement reached at the six party talks with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
"While this is only a first step in a broader effort to completely dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons program, we salute this attempt to bring peace and stability to the Korean Peninsula." Mackay said in a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon.
"Canada has consistently advocated the six-party talks as the best means for North Korea to address its long-term economic, political and security goals," He said.
The six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue ended on Tuesday in Beijing with the signing of a joint document, under which DPRK will shut down and seal the Yongbyon nuclear facility, including the reprocessing facility, and invite back IAEA personnel to conduct all necessary monitoring and verifications.
