Overcharging rampant in China's education, health sectors: central government
font size

Overcharging is rampant in the education and health sectors, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

China uncovered 84,760 cases of overcharging last year, involving 3.3 billion yuan (417.75 million U.S. dollars), said a NDRC report.

Inflated school fees and extortionate medical treatment accounted for more than 60 percent of all cases.

Unwarranted charging was also on the rise in the telecommunications and refined oil sectors, up 66 percent and 17 percent respectively.

According to the NDRC, the government will continue its campaign against overcharging this year, especially in sectors such as education, medical treatment and transportation.
