Exiled politburo chief of Hamas in Syria Khaled Meshaal Thursday called on the international community to end the siege on the Palestinian people after the formation of the upcoming Palestinian unity government.
Meshaal made the appeal at a joint press conference after his meeting on Thursday with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, noting that the international community should deal with the new government in a fair way.
The Mecca agreement laid the groundwork for accomplishing the Palestinian national cause, establishing the Palestinian independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, repatriation of the Palestinian refugees, releasing the prisoners and halting the construction of the Jewish settlements, Meshaal added.
Meshaal urged the international community to seize the opportunity given by the Mecca deal, stressing Hamas's commitment to the political platform of the new Palestinian government and establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.
Likewise, Meshaal called on the United States to change its stance towards the Palestinians after the signing of the Mecca agreement by the Palestinian rival factions of Hamas and Fatah, noting that there was a shift in the European and Russian stances on the Palestinians.
For his part, Moussa said the Arab world was supporting the Palestinian political efforts to establish a Palestinian state, calling for giving a chance to the recent international efforts to succeed.
Moussa added that Meshaal's confirmation of acceptance to establish the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders is an important message that must be welcomed by the world.
On Feb. 8, Hamas and Fatah agreed in Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca on number of portfolios they would obtain in the future national unity government. In the meantime, Prime Minister Ismail Haneya of Hamas was designated to form the new Palestinian government.
The Palestinians have been under economic blockade by the west and Israel since Hamas, which is committed to Israel's destruction, took office last March.
