World powers meet to discuss further measures on Iran
font size

Representatives of the five permanent members of UN Security council -- Britain, the United States, France, China and Russia -- plus Germany met on Monday to discuss further measures against Iran, which is taking a tough stance on its nuclear program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared on Sunday that the country's uranium enrichment was "a train on a one-way track with no brake and no reverse gear."

Government sources said the world powers will probably discuss adding a travel ban on senior Iranian officials and restrictions on non-nuclear business to existing sanctions banning transfers of nuclear technology.

Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), presented on Thursday a report to the agency's Council of Governors and UN Security Council, concluding that Iran had not complied with resolution 1737 calling for the suspension of its uranium enrichment activities.

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has said the United States and his allies were willing to persuade Iran to suspend the nuclear programs, but all options were on the table in order to prevent the Islamic Republic from owning nuclear weapons.
