Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Monday paid a visit to the victims of floods in the Zambezi valley in the central Zambezia and Sofala provinces, and also visited a region of the southern Inhambane province hit by cyclone Favio last week.
As the Mozambique News Agency reported on Monday from the capital of Maputo, Guebuza visited families in different accommodation centers in the districts of Tambara, Mutarara, in the western Tete, and Mopeia, in Zambezia, and Marromeu in Sofala.
During his visit, Guebuza insisted that low lying areas and islands along the Zambezi river, although good for agriculture, can not be used for housing.
He said currently the government's main concern is people's health.
Late Monday evening, Guebuza visited the Vilankulo municipality that was hit by cyclone Favio last Thursday.
The devastating damage of the cyclone are visible in the entire Vilankulo town with destroyed buildings, some with collapsed roofs, and fallen trees.
About 140,000 people, victims of floods in the Zambezi basin, are now sheltered in 53 accommodation centers in the Manica, Sofala, Zambezia, and Tete provinces.
