The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) killed an Afghan civilian in the southern Kandahar province on Tuesday morning, an ISAF statement said.
The civilian was mistakenly killed at around 8:00 a.m. (0330 GMT) in the west of Kandahar city, the provincial capital, when his vehicle failed to heed warnings not to approach a security cordon, the statement said.
The security cordon had been established around an ISAF armored vehicle which had stopped due to mechanical problems, the statement said, adding the civilian approached in a vehicle and failed to stop despite verbal warnings.
The outer perimeter of the cordon manned by Afghan police was breached and the vehicle continued to accelerate towards the ISAF vehicle, the statement said.
ISAF soldiers subsequently fired, killing the driver, who was found to be a civilian, it added.
A full and thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident commenced, the statement said.
ISAF occasionally killed Afghan civilians, who were suspected of being suicide bombers or other attackers.
