U.S. soldier killed in bomb attack south of Baghdad

A U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded Monday after their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in an Iraqi city south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The soldiers assigned to 13th Sustainment Command ( Expeditionary) were on their M-1114 HMMWV when the vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device at about 10:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) in the al-Diwaniyah city, some 180 km south of Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

One injured soldier was transferred to the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad, the statement said.

The attack came amid the ongoing large-scale security clampdown launched by U.S. and Iraqi forces in order to rein in violence in the war-torn country.

More than 3,155 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led war on Iraq broke out in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
