Death toll rises to 10 killed in spate of car bomb target Shiite pilgrims

The death toll rose to 10 and up to 42 people wounded in three car bomb attacks targeted Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad on Tuesday, an Interior Ministry source said.

"The latest reports said that three pilgrims were killed and 12 others injured in the car bomb attack near the Um al-Toboul mosque in Yarmouk district," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Earlier the source put the toll at three killed and 10 wounded.

"Up to five pilgrims were killed and 15 others wounded in the car bomb blast which took place near the Qahtan Square in Yarmouk district," the source said.

Earlier the source put the toll at one pilgrim was killed and three others wounded.

"The third car bomb that was parking near an intersection in Baghdad's southern district of Doura, killed two pilgrims and wounded 15 others," the source added.

Earlier, the source said that the blast killed two pilgrims and wounded ten others.

The sectarian violence in Baghdad comes two days before the occasion of Arba'een (40 days after the day of Ashura), which is the commemoration of the martyrdom by beheading of Imam al-Hussien bin Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the seventh century.
