The United States said on Wednesday that Iran need to prove it is serious about helping to quell violence in Iraq when an international conference on security in Iraq is due to be held on March 10.
"To be helpful, Iran needs to make sure that there is no more exporting into Iraq of people who are committing acts of terror and also weapons that are being used to kill Americans and Iraqis and others within Iraq, in an effort to disrupt the government," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
"There are a number of things that the Iranians can do to demonstrate their bona fides as good neighbors. And we hope they'll do it," he added.
Snow made the remarks a day after U.S. President George W. Bush said that the Saturday international conference on Iraq issue will be "a test of whether Iran and Syria are truly interested in being constructive forces in Iraq."
Washington has been accusing both Iran and Syria of "allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq."
