According to the Administration Center for the Sharing of Cultural Resources Project under the Ministry of Culture, as part of the national project to share cultural resources, a network system that covers both urban and rural areas has been created.
Over the past five years, the best of China's cultural resources have been digitalized, primarily for the benefit of farmers.
As of January this year, the size of the digital resources of the project was 56 TB (1TB digital resources equal to 250,000 electronic books or 926 hours of video programs). There were 6700 sub-centers and small service centers reaching out to over 100 million farmers.
At present, the website has 45 items, 5 sub-editions, and 45 special databases. These large databases were established to process and integrate resources from libraries, museums, art galleries, art research institutes, performing arts groups, film companies and more, nationwide.
Millions of farmers have benefited from the project. They share the resources through the internet, internet mirrors, satellites, CDs, portable storage devices, digital TV and cable TV. In many areas, farmers rely on the project for technological training and migrant workers for basic employment skills, which has promoted harmonious development in rural areas.
It is estimated that by 2010, there will be no less than 50,000 e-books and 14,000 video resources on the website.
