Two speakers of the Polish parliament will leave for Italy on Wednesday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which marked the foundation of the modern-day European Union (EU), the PAP news agency reported Tuesday.
In the Italian city of Florence, Sejm Speaker Marek Jurek and Deputy Senate Speaker Marek Ziolkowski are expected to attend a debate on Europe's future at the European University Institute.
Jurek told PAP that during the debate he would stress the need for the strengthening of a sense of solidarity in Europe in such fields as energy.
He added that he would also touch upon the issue of EU enlargement and Europe's involvement in favor of justice and human rights around the world.
The foundation for the EU was laid with the signing of the Treaty of Rome on March 25, 1957, which launched Europe's common market. Poland joined the EU on May 1, 2004.
