Cambodia to sign protocol on preventing nuclear terrorism: FM
font size

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong responded positively to a request from the U.S. and Russia to join the battle against global nuclear terrorism, local media reported on Thursday.

During the meeting with U.S. Ambassdor Joseph A. Mussomeli and Russian Ambassdor Valery Y. Tereshenko at the Foreign Ministry, Hor Namhong said that Cambodia supports and will sign the protocol initiated by U.S. President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit of the Group of Eight (G8) on the prevention of nuclear terrorism, said Chinese daily newspaper Jian Hua Daily.

The nation does not have any issues against signing the protocol and it had signed a similar agreement with ASEAN (the Association of South East Asia Nations) members as well as other countries in the same spirit, Cambodian daily newspaper the Koh Santepheap quoted the minister as saying.

Cambodia has long been committed to the fight against terrorism, especially following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the U. S., another Cambodian daily newspaper the Rasmei Kampuchea quoted him as saying.

The kingdom views terrorism as a global but not country- specific threat, the minister added.
