Polish President Lech Kaczynski will summon on Tuesday a meeting of the National Security Council (RBN) to discuss the deployment of elements of the U.S. anti- missile shield in Poland, the National Security Office (BBN) said on Monday.
According to a U.S. proposal, an anti-missile base could be deployed in Poland to supplement bases in Alaska and California intercepting rockets from Middle and Far East towards the U.S.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last week during her visit in Poland that the shield should be discussed and implemented within NATO and not as a bilateral project between the U.S. and Poland. Kaczynski said he would present Merkel's arguments to the RBN, the Polish news agency PAP reported.
RBN is an advisory institution to the president of Poland in the field of national and external state security. However, its decisions are not binding for the president.
The RBN is made up of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Deputy Prime Minister Ludwik Dorn, ministers of defense, interior and foreign affairs Aleksander Szczyglo, Janusz Kaczmarek, Anna Fotyga, speakers of the Sejm and the Senate Marek Jurek and Bogdan Borusewicz, BBN head and RBN secretary Wladyslaw Stasiak, former Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, former Foreign Minister Stefan Meller and former Defense Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
