Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are to deliver 250,000 rechargeable lamps for this month's elections.
An INEC official said the lamps to be delivered to polling centers are for use in case that the voting was conducted at night.
The INEC's National Commissioner in charge of publicity Phillip Umeadi said on Saturday the lamps, which were supplied two weeks ago to the INEC by a contractor, were being kept in the commission's central store and logistics center in the Central Business District of Abuja.
He said there were concerns that voting and the collation of results might encounter power shortage and last till deep night in polling centers.
"If such things happen, we will use the lamps to illuminate the polling centers so that the exercise can go on unhindered. We want to avoid a situation where polling officials and others will use the cover of darkness to commit fraud," he said.
Meanwhile, the INEC will also establish more polling booths to complement the 120,000 units scattered in Nigeria.
