Uruguay crushes Ecuador 5-0 in Davis Cup tennis

Uruguay's Davis Cup tennis team won the two remaining singles matches against Ecuador on Sunday, brining their total score for the Americas Cup Zone Two series to 5-0.

Paraguay's top racket, Pablo Cuevas, who is rated 209th in the world the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), scored an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Carlos Avellan, on the 2,000-seat clay courts of Punta del Este's Cantegril Club, 140 kms east of Montevideo.

Federico Sansonetti, Uruguay number four and ATP 1,037th, beat Ecuador's number two racket, the unrated Julio Campozano, with a more balanced 6-3 and 6-4.

Uruguay had already won the series on Saturday when a doubles win took it 3-0 up against Ecuador. It will now play the winner of the Paraguay-Dominican Republic series in the final, which takes the winner into Americas Zone One.

On Saturday Marcel Felder and Martin Vilarrubi beat Avellan and Jean Durango 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (2) and 6-0. On Friday Felder beat Avellan and Cuevas beat Campozano.

Ecuador's low score was in large part due to missing two top players, Nicolas Lapentti, ATP 63rd, and his brother Giovanni, ATP 443rd.

Cuevas is showing signs of major progress, having rising 36 places following a good performance in Italy's Challenger Cup.
