font size

Unknown gunmen shot dead a senior Electricity Ministry official in eastern Baghdad on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry source said.

"Hashim Abdul Abbas Hallawi, a director general in the Ministry of Electricity, was gunned down by unknown gunmen while his convoy was traveling in the al-Qanat Street on the way to his work," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

His driver was also killed in the attack, the source added.

Separately, two people were wounded when U.S. military vehicles ran over three civilian cars in the Ghadeer neighborhood in eastern the capital, according to the source.

Two more civilian cars were also damaged in the same way in Baghdad's central neighborhood of Karradah without causing casualties, said the source.

The U.S. military was not immediately available to confirm the two incidents.
