Two car bomb attacks in Iraq killed at least 50 people on Saturday, police said.

In Iraq's Shiite holy city of Karbala, a car bomb exploded at a shopping area near a bus station at 9:15 am (0515 GMT), killing at least 40 people and wounded 42 others. Many of the victims were women and children.

The bus station is about 200 meters away from the Imam Hussein shrine.

Meanwhile in Baghdad, a car bomb attack at a checkpoint on the southern Baghdad Jadriyah bridge over the River Tigris killed at least 10 persons and wounded 14 others.

This is the second attack on a major bridge in Baghdad this week.

On Thursday, a suicide truck bomb killed 11 people on the al-Sarafiyah bridge in northern Baghdad.
